Understanding Antiperspirants - Part 3: Deodorants and Fragrances

Antiperspirants vs. Deodorants
It is important to understand the difference between an "antiperspirant" and a "deodorant." An "antiperspirant" uses aluminum to block sweat. A "deodorant" does not block sweat but rather absorbs moisture and masks body odor. Confusingly, some products contain both aluminum and deodorant-like ingredients.
In a previous post, I reviewed how to properly apply an antiperspirant (spoiler: at night to dry skin). Deodorants should be applied in the morning. If applied properly, your antiperspirant will last at least 24 hours so there is no need to apply antiperspirant again in the morning, which is why we recommend against products that are both an antiperspirant and deodorant. This only increases your risk of side effects.
Key takeaway: If a product does not have aluminum, it does NOTHING to stop you from sweating.
Fragrances
Most antiperspirants, deodorants, and antiperspirant-deodorant combination products contain fragrances, but for patients with hyperhidrosis, we recommend against products with fragrances because they can be a source of irritation and/or allergic rashes.
If you are looking for an fragrance-free and dye-free deodorant, we developed MagDeo® deodorant, which is a simple, two-ingredient magnesium deodorant designed for people with hyperhidrosis.
