Preventing & Treating Side Effects - Glycopyrrolate Tablets

Glycopyrrolate tablets are used to treat hyperhidrosis when antiperspirants are not enough or when antiperspirants cannot be used. They are very effective at reducing sweating, but like all medications, they can have side effects such as dry mouth, dry eyes, dry skin, and constipation. If you think about it, these side effects make sense because the medication is "drying." You want it to dry your sweat, but you do not want it to dry your mouth, eyes, and skin. Fortunately, you can manage these side effects.

The most important thing you can do to manage side effects of glycopyrrolate is to STAY HYDRATED. This will help with all of the side effects I mentioned above (dry mouth, dry eyes, dry skin, constipation). Drink plenty of water throughout the day, and avoid caffeinated beverages and alcohol.

Specific to dry mouth, you should consider lozenges, hard candy, and/or chewing gum to help stimulate saliva production. Keep in mind that some lozenges, hard candies, and chewing gums may have sugar, so consider sugar-free options if you are diabetic or are concerned about sugar consumption.

Lubricating eye drops can be used for dry eyes. These are available over the counter at a pharmacy near you.

If constipation is an issue, increase fiber intake. Fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and legumes are rich in fiber, which helps add bulk to the stool and facilitates smooth bowel movements. If constipation persists, an over-the-counter stool softener or laxative may be considered after consultation with your doctor or pharmacist.
