Prevention and Treatment of Fungal Infections

Patients with hyperhidrosis are at an increased risk of fungal infections because hyperhidrosis creates a warm, moist environment that is ideal for fungal growth. This article covers fungal infections and how to prevent and treat them.

Connection Between Hyperhidrosis and Fungal Infections

Sweat accumulation in areas like the underarms, feet, groin, and skin folds provides an ideal environment for the growth of fungi. Several of the most common fungal infections generally are linked to hyperhidrosis:

  • Athlete's Foot - fungal infection in the feet that causes itching, peeling, and discomfort
  • Jock Itch - red, itchy rash that spreads along the inner thighs and buttocks
  • Ringworm - a contagious fungal infection that appears as red, scaly patches on the skin, often in a ring-like shape
  • Yeast Infections - particularly common under the breasts and between toes, yeast grows disproportionately, which may cause a rash or scaliness of the skin

Prevention

Keeping your skin dry is the most effective way to prevent fungal infections. Our prescription-strength antiperspirants are different than most other products on the market because they are designed for different areas of the body. Particularly relevant to fungal infections, consider our butter for use on the feet or our lotion for the groin and/or under the breasts.

Other things you can do are:

  • Wear breathable fabrics - loose, moisture-wicking clothing made of cotton or performance fabrics can help keep sweat off the skin
  • Antifungal powders and sprays - apply antifungal products to sweat-prone areas to absorb moisture and prevent fungal growth
  • Proper hygiene - wash your body daily and dry thoroughly and wear clean, dry clothes after washing

Treatment

Fungal infections can often be managed over-the-counter with topical antifungal medications (for example, terbinafine or clotrimazole). Consider consulting with your doctor for more frequent or severe infections.
