Debunking Aluminum Myths - Part 3: Skin Microbiome

In this third post of a three-part series, I review the "controversy" around aluminum and the skin microbiome

Microbiome

Background

When it comes to skincare, one emerging topic is the effect of a product on the skin microbiome (microorganisms on our skin that form a barrier against harmful bacteria, fungi, and viruses). There are some claims that aluminum can disrupt or kill off the skin microbiome, which results in skin irritation, redness, bumps, and poor skin health; however, there is limited evidence to support these claims. By properly applying antiperspirants (see my prior post), you drastically reduce your risk for skin irritation, redness, and other skin complications.

More work needs to be done in this area to truly understand the impact of aluminum on the skin microbiome, but based on the current state of medical and scientific literature, for patients with excessive sweating, the benefits of antiperspirants far outweigh any potential harm to the skin microbiome.
